Snowy Mountains

NSW side:

The difference between our favourite NSW Snowy Mountain rides is that one caters for people who prefer to camp out most nights and travels mostly within the Kosciusko National Park, and the other offers the comforts of a soft bed each night, and the riding happens on mountain farmland outside the Park. Both rides offer great scenery and wildlife sightings are quite frequent.

During my last check on the Snowy Mountains I made friends with `Pal' at Snowy River Horseback Adventure, a handsome 15.2hh palomino, who carried me for a day through gullies, hills and creeks past wombats, kangaroos and wallabies. We had a sumptousl picnic lunch in the wide open sapces. The only thing I regret about that day is that I had to move on without being able to enjoy the hospitality of Homestead Chalet.

On the way back across the beautiful mountains I called at Reynella at Reynella Rides and relived the memory of a previous ride, when we rode, no, clambered up Mount Morgan, left the horses and scaled up to the Trig Point - what a view!, what a day! The Rudd family is part of the history of the area, they know it well, they know their fit mountain horses and can trust them to give you a great ride whatever your riding level is.

These rides are accessible from Cooma Airport. Transfers to the properties can be arranged. The rides only operate during our summer months of course - November to April. The accommodated ride - October to May. Please click through to their own websites in the highlighted text above.

Victorian side:

There are many good rides - a wonderful packhorse ride in the Mt Bogong area - 5 days total camp-out mountain experience. Again the season is very simliar to the rides on the NSW side.

Helen at Dinner Plains also offers wonderful riding experiences. Many rides start from Dinner Plains on Mount Hotham, the highest village in Australia, others start from the Willows, near Omeo. Rides are designed to match requirements. The trout fishing, should you be so inclined, is really something too! All these rides are accessed via Melbourne - bus or train.
